  • Display card lags in 3ds Max when FStorm RT running

Problem: When RT starts 3dsmax - display card lags - lag in 3ds Max only (other Microsoft windows/apps seem to be not affected)

Example: While RT running - pan/zoom in RT window lags, moving RT window lags, navigating inside 3dsmax viewports lags etc

I've recently bought a GTX1070 and spent the last few days trying to fix this issue. I'm reaching out here as I havn't been able to fix.

Everything is the same hardware as previously installed in PC, except swapping old render card GTX780 out for a GTX1070. My display card is a GTX750Ti, previously paired with the GTX780 as the render card there were no lag issues in 3dsmax. Plenty of PSU power and high quality PSU (issues with power would have appeared using GTX780)

I've rebuilt PC (clean install windows 10pro), latest NVidia Drivers - to try and solve issue.

It feels as though the GPU manager settings are not working as they should, that the new GTX1070 is taking priority or conflicting inside max when RT on. Is it a a bug could something not correctly working with the GPU Manager in FStorm settings, or any other ideas to resolve? I have tried other versions FStorm no obvious change.

My Typical GPU Manager settings are: (1)GTX1070 render (2)GTX750Ti mat.editor

    Thanks

I am with the same problem with the same card, GTX 1070. May be 10 series?

Have you tried to set low priority in fstorm gpu manager?

Thanks - I've also tried 1070 on low priority no change.Cannot seem to figure this out as soon, fire up RT and only in max I get lag.

lag cycle dependent on Render Setup output size, lower res say 960px wide lag cycle quick but still there, bump up to 1920 and gets very choppy the lag through entire 3dsmax environment and incl. viewports (including scrolling Render Setup settings etc) and RT window pan and zoom my rendering image.

Hi Karba is there something I can supply you to try and resolve this Issue (a log etc?), lag is only happening while running FStorm render.

I downloaded demo of Octane and it works as it should, no lag in max environment liquid fast when RT running and orbiting models etc or moving/zooming/panning RT window - using same scene from ArchVizScenes corner window scene for both Octane and FStorm renderers.

I have done a repair on max no change, I have manually uninstalled FStorm - although I wonder if there is any other files or settings logs that may be corrupted somewhere for FStorm on my PC? Thoughts?

              I got lags, too.
              6x gtx680 one dedicated.
              win 8.1x64 max2015
WHOLE SYSTEM affected. (switching tabs in firefox, file explorer etc)

edit: with octane no problems I can do other work without problem side by side.

Maybe Pagefile managment can be improved in FStorm.

For now. Allow more memory to virtual memory. Its saturation may cause lag.

Also you can clean it up at shutdown, with this regkeys:

Create new txt file, rename it "ClearPageFileAtShutdown ON.reg" and edit

                Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

                [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management]
                "ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000001
                Save but don't close.

Modify 00000001 to 00000000 and save as ""ClearPageFileAtShutdown OFF.reg". Close editor.

Now double-click on file you need to set On or Off.

Windows clear pagefile on reboot and start with virgin pagefile.

Fixed it ... I feel there is a bug / conflict with MS Windows Defender and FStorm.

This needs further attention Karba, absolutely makes FStorm/Max unusable (simply cannot work with any max lag). Every other app including Octane is not affected by Windows Defender., why FStorm?

I noticed MsMpEng.exe was creeping in every now and then when RT running when I was running diagnostics.

                  Fix:
Disabled Real-Time Protection and Cloud-based Protection (Update & Security>Windows Defender). Simple.

Hope this helps you boris/Maguko and anyone else having this issue. And for anyone that is not having this issue, you may find performance/framerate increases if disable MS Def.

Thanks Sylk for your suggestion also great idea and valuable info.

FStorm uses a bit more CPU than Octane due to adaptive sampling.

I have a strong CPU - 5820K OC to 4.3. Issue is Fstorm not playing nice with windows defender - you may want to check this.

Previously I alway used 3rd party antivirus, when got the 1070 I rebuilt and fresh install windows and ran with defender, was the last think i thought would be the problem.
