  • importance sampling ???

    maybe just a misunderstood :

Why is "importance sampling" named "importance sampling", it's so octane !
For me there are 2 different things in it : environment direct light and noise reduction.

I don't understand when I should disable it.

    ok, I will rename it.
If you have just constant environment, then it is pretty useless.

I almost always use a hdr bitmap to light my scenes (custom bitmap from hdr studio or exterior commercial hdr file). So I think that it should always be enable.

In Octane, I usually turn off 'importance sampling' on night scenes when there are more lights/emitters than environment or hdr lighting.
