  • Direct Lighting Kernel test

    Hi everyone

I am experimenting with something similar to Octane Direct Lighting kernel.
    Here is the result
    3200x3200 37min on 980Ti + Titan X

what is the advantage of direct lighting kernel ?

This kernel or I would say feature allows you to do render much faster and a little bit less realistically. It is some kind of mix with AO.

It's always good to have alternatives to PT.
Do you think it's possible to make PT even faster? In Octane you can enable "Path term. power" and "Coherent ratio" to speed up the render.
Adaptive sampling is already great (!) but maybe there are other solutions?

Path Termination Power (path term. power)
This parameter provides a system where users can tweak samples/second vs. convergence (how fast noise vanishes). Increasing this value will cause the kernels to keep paths shorter and spend less time on dark areas (which means they stay noisy longer) but may increase samples/second. Reducing this value will cause kernels to trace longer paths in average and spend more time on dark areas. In short, high values increases the render speed but may lead to higher noise in dark areas.

          Coherent Ratio (coherent_ratio)
When Coherent mode is enabled either for Path Tracing or Direct Lighting then picture becomes faster noise free but
downside is flickering effects when rendering animation. For stills and action-heavy animations/cameras Coherent mode
          might save you some time

Coherent ration is impossible to implement with current fstorm engine.
Path termination is build-in with optimal value.

Performance is always in my minds.
