Well, today I was able to test some Max start speeds on a SSD. As I thought to remember, 2013 was veeery fast and my favourite. It's a pitty majority of software don't support it anymore (Or it's a pitty that the developers of 3ds Max are a little...lazy)

        2013: 30sec
        2016: 60sec
        2017: 50sec

        Opening a medium file:

2013: not compatible (but I think it was faster too)
        2016: 45sec
        2017: 40sec

PS: How do you get those low Vram values?

My 3ds Max take (Windows 7 x64 Ultimate):

        2013: 245mb
        2016: 430mb
        2017: 400mb

EDITED: OH, I see you wer talking about Vram used by the SO! Well, anyway those are my values for 3ds Max Vram usage (Exclusively 3ds Max)

well for me the 2016 viewport had not strange issues nor anything, it just give me a hell of a lot less frames per second, in one case with a simple product animation, I remember I had to do a visor animation preview to actually see it in real time, when the same file in my home pc with 2015 and a leaser graphics card could hit 40 fps easily

ok maybe i just answered my own question, i have a massive 1gig scene i worked on last year and i just tested them between max 2015 and 2017, seems the fps in 2017 is double! 19 in max 2017 and 8 in 2015, i like that, i will definetly be trying it more and more and try to get used it somewhat, just for scene performance i think its a big plus for me

any of you seeing the behavior where right clicking and selecting some tab in the rollout only opens and closes the rollout and not actually jump to the tab needed?

Yup, just check/uncheck rollout. Logical behavior, but you're right, not convenient.
